The Fragrance Pyramid
Fragrances have three layers that develop over time. Understanding this pyramid helps you appreciate fragrance complexity.
Top Notes (First 5-15 Minutes)
Bright, fresh, volatile. Often citrus, herbs, or light florals. Creates first impression. Evaporates quickly due to small molecular size.
Heart Notes (15 Minutes to 4 Hours)
The fragrance's core character. Floral, spice, fruit. Emerges as top notes fade. Creates the signature scent personality. Most important layer.
Base Notes (4+ Hours, Longevity)
Deep, warm, lasting. Woods, amber, musk, oud. Creates longevity and projection. Heaviest molecules that stay on skin longest.
